Audio Dramas Deserve More Respect

A Qube exclusive interview with Anna DeShawn & Jana Naomi Smith

Have you listened to an audio drama before? If you haven’t, I’m challenging you to give it a try. If you want some recommendations copy “Give me a rec” in the comments and I’ll drop a few because I love them so much; the music, the sound design, the storytelling, the writing, the voice actors, the cliffhangers, just ALL of it.

“Wait, is that it?” is what my wife asked when we finished listening to Red for Revolution. The latest audio drama I’ve completed. I knew when she got hooked I had to speak with the creator, writer, and lyricist of Red for Revolution Jana Naomi Smith. I had to hear how she brought this series to life. So, if you’ve ever been curious about the process of bringing an audio drama to life this is worth the watch. I think once you get done you’ll understand my sentiment that audio dramas deserve more respect.

Red of Revolutions happens.

In this exclusive interview, I sit down with creator Jana Naomi Smith to discuss this star-studded six-part series that weaves together intergenerational stories of Black women, queer love, and liberation.

About the Series

Red for Revolution follows Jazmine, an 18-year-old navigating her queer identity and fractured family ties, as she uncovers the passionate love story between her grandmother, jazz singer Lorraine Giovanni, and activist Ella Ali in 1971. Through a star-studded cast—including Jordan Hull, Loretta Devine, S.
